Gratuity FAQs

How is gratuity calculated in the UAE?+

For mainland (MOHRE) employees, gratuity is 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years of service, and 30 days of basic salary for each year after that. It is based on the last basic salary (excluding allowances) and capped at two years' total wage. A minimum of one year of continuous service is required.

Is gratuity based on basic salary or total salary?+

It is calculated on the basic salary only. Housing, transport and other allowances are excluded.

Do I get gratuity if I resign?+

Under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 (effective 2 February 2022), full-time employees who complete at least one year are entitled to gratuity whether they resign or are terminated. The old reductions for resignation under unlimited contracts no longer apply.

Does this calculator cover DIFC or ADGM?+

No. DIFC and ADGM have jurisdiction-specific rules and savings-scheme treatment. This calculator is limited to eligible workers under the federal private-sector regime.

Is unpaid leave counted in my service period?+

No. Days of unpaid absence are not included when calculating the length of service for gratuity.
