Women living in the UAE on a residence visa sponsored by their husbands can legally work without changing their residency status, provided their employer obtains the required work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).
The clarification reinforces an existing UAE labour rule and does not represent a new policy change.
A spouse-sponsored residence visa allows a person to live in the UAE but does not serve as authorization to work. Before employment begins, the hiring company must apply for the appropriate MoHRE work permit on behalf of the employee. Once the permit is approved, the individual can work legally while remaining under the family residence visa sponsored by their spouse.
In some cases, employers or the relevant authority may request a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the sponsoring spouse as part of the application process. The exact documentation may vary depending on the employer or employment category.
MoHRE offers a dedicated work permit service for dependents sponsored by family members. The permit supports various employment arrangements, including full-time, part-time, temporary, flexible, remote, and job-sharing roles. According to the ministry, the permit is generally valid for two years, and the standard processing time is around two working days after a complete application is submitted.
The clarification applies to spouse-sponsored residents, including women on family visas, and helps address a common misconception that a family residence visa must be cancelled before accepting employment.
Residents planning to take up a job should ensure that their employer completes the required work permit procedures before starting work to remain fully compliant with UAE labour regulations.
